It was Alien . Sort of. The Nostromo’s corridors were the same, but the crew was wrong. Dallas had an extra set of eyelids. Kane moved backwards while walking forwards. The dialogue was English, but the sync was off by half a second—as if the actors weren’t the ones making the sounds, but rather something else was puppeting their mouths.

The film began.
Maya called her supervisor, a man named Thorne who smelled like old coffee and conspiracy. He didn’t ask questions. He just leaned over her shoulder and whispered, “Play it.” It was Alien
The Wayback Machine player flickered. The familiar 20th Century Fox fanfare didn’t play. Instead, there was a subsonic hum—the kind you feel in your molars.
