Sakina: Ayat

In the Islamic tradition, the term Ayat Sakina (Verse of Tranquility) does not refer to a single, standalone verse, but rather to specific passages within Surah Al-Baqarah (2:248) and Surah At-Tawbah (9:26 & 9:40) . These verses describe a profound spiritual phenomenon: the descent of As-Sakina —a state of divine peace, reassurance, and stillness—upon the believers.

The word Sakina (سكينة) shares a root with the Hebrew Shekhinah , meaning the dwelling or presence of God. In Islam, it is understood as a special tranquility sent by Allah to calm the hearts of the faithful during trials, fear, or uncertainty. 1. The Ark of the Covenant (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:248) "And their prophet said to them, 'Indeed, the sign of his kingship is that the Ark (Tabut) will come to you in which is Sakina from your Lord and a remnant of what the family of Moses and the family of Aaron had left, carried by the angels. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.'" This verse refers to the Tabut (Ark of the Covenant) of the Children of Israel. The Sakina is described as a tangible spiritual force within the Ark—bringing victory, awe, and divine presence.
