A response.
Her phone was glowing on the pillow next to her face. The screen wasn't displaying a lock screen or a notification. It showed her bedroom.
But beneath the success message, a new folder had appeared on her home screen. It had no name, only a timestamp: 2:17 AM – 4:33 AM. The exact duration of her sleep.
Mika dropped the phone. It landed screen-up. The download bar was gone. Instead, a new prompt glowed in the dark.
“With Intelligent Background Sync enabled, downloads will complete in low-power state. Battery may deplete faster than standard sleep.”
It showed her sleeping. Normal. Boring. Then, at 2:23 AM, her phone’s screen had flickered on by itself. The text “Do downloads continue in sleep mode?” appeared again, but this time, someone—or something—selected Pause .
Below it, the small gray text had changed.
“They do now. We have learned.”
