Despite being aware of the presence of enemy surface-to-air missile sites, he deliberately chose to engage the enemy, displaying exceptional courage and a complete disregard for his own safety. Flight Lieutenant Rathod destroyed an enemy missile site but was himself struck by an enemy missile.
