We trust libraries with our dead relatives' diaries because the librarian has a code of ethics. We do not trust Facebook with our live relatives' data because the corporation has a shareholder. The "Inside Out" model shifts trust from the platform (which wants to exploit the present) to the archive (which promises to protect the past). If the Internet Archive is the memory of the crowd , the Inside Out Archive is the memory of the individual . It is messy. It is legally terrifying. The question isn't whether we can build the Inside Out Internet Archive. The question is whether we have the courage to open the closet door, throw away the key, and donate the contents to tomorrow.
