Disguised as a nun, Phoenix steals the book from the antique shop. Paddington happens to be nearby and chases the thief. In the confusion, a witness sees Paddington holding the book and assumes he is the thief. Police arrive, and despite the Browns’ pleas, the bumbling Inspector (played by a returning Peter Capaldi) arrests Paddington.
Back in prison, Paddington realizes the book’s true secret: it’s not just a gift but a puzzle left by the explorer to honor the city’s hidden history. The film opens in Darkest Peru, where young Paddington and his Aunt Lucy are visited by a mysterious, bearded explorer.
