Elias looked down. His own hand was on the brass crank. Had he put it there? Or had it always been there? He tried to let go. He couldn’t.

He’d given her fifty dollars just to see her leave. Now, alone, his curiosity was a living thing.

The animals parted. From the empty space in the circle, a man stepped out. He was tall, gaunt, and wore a frayed suit. His face was a mosaic of faded, forgotten features. But his hands were clear: one was a man’s hand, pale and long-fingered. The other was a paw. pawndex

The man with the paw-hand stepped forward, reached out, and gently, almost lovingly, placed Elias’s thumb on the empty card. It fit the smudge perfectly.

Elias lowered the bat. “Hey, boy.”

The bell cracked and fell silent.

It was empty. No paw print. Just a deep, thumb-shaped smudge in the center. Elias looked down

And the pawnshop was empty again. Silent. The glass case held only a faint film of dust and a single, small brass bell with a crack in it.
