Elena reached the Badlands at dusk. The air smelled of rust and mesquite. As she climbed the main array tower, motion sensors on her wrist beeped — not for humans. Thermal signatures were inverting : cold spots moving fast, hot spots standing still.

Here’s a story titled: San Ángel, Mexico – Near the Texas border

Elena escaped through a waste chute as the ship detonated, burying the creature and the lair under a mile of rock. She limped back to San Ángel, the melted drive still in her pocket.

It didn't growl. It pointed at the screen, then at her, then at the ground.

The drive had one final file: a self-destruct sequence for the ship. Elena had 90 seconds to trigger it.
