Looking back from the hyper-visual, pan-Indian landscape of today, the Tamil film industry of 2005 feels like a fascinating crossroads. It was a year where the old guard held strong, the next generation of stars began to flex their muscles, and the technology of filmmaking (especially visual effects) took a massive leap forward. If 2004 was about tragedy and political undercurrents, 2005 was about raw energy, larger-than-life heroes, and a surprising dose of horror.

Coming off the massive success of Anniyan (late 2005 release in some regions, but considered the peak of the year), Vikram was on top. However, his film Majaa (released earlier in 2005) was a commercial disappointment. It proved that even star power couldn't save a weak script.

Suriya had two major releases. First was Aaru , a gritty action film where he played a ruthless don. While not a massive hit, it gained a cult following for its raw violence. However, his major success was Ghajini (directed by A.R. Murugadoss). Although the Aamir Khan Hindi remake is more famous globally, the original Tamil version introduced audiences to the concept of short-term memory loss used as a revenge tool. Suriya’s ripped physique and emotional performance set a new standard for action heroes.
