For an hour, George sat in a plastic lawn chair, a beer in his hand, while Sheldon pointed a toy telescope at a patch of stars and lectured him on the Yarkovsky effect. George didn’t see an asteroid. He saw a frightened little boy who had too many numbers in his head and not enough comfort. So he did what any exhausted Texas father would do: he lied.
“The okra is the least of our concerns, Mother,” Sheldon replied without looking up. “In approximately seventy-two hours, a celestial body the size of the Dallas-Fort Worth airport will enter our atmosphere. The resulting impact will generate an explosion equivalent to 50 megatons of TNT. Lubbock will cease to exist.”
“That’s a dot, son. A dot on a page.”
“You’re a strange little boy,” she whispered.
“It’s not a theory, Dad. It’s orbital mechanics. The margin of error is plus or minus four hours.” Sheldon finally looked up, his face pale. “I suggest we start digging a bunker. Or, more efficiently, relocate to Chile. The Southern Hemisphere has a statistically lower impact probability.”
