Across the table, Missy, his twin sister, takes a long, deliberate sip of her orange juice. “So you’re not special anymore?” she says, smiling sweetly. Sheldon glares. George Sr., arriving home from his high school football coaching job, hears the tail end of the conversation and sighs. He knows what’s coming: a hurricane of Sheldon-sized insecurity.

Paige starts by closing her eyes, then begins drawing spirals. Sheldon starts by writing fifty-seven equations. Halfway through, Paige leans over, looks at his work, and whispers, “You’re overcomplicating the Penrose tiles.” She then solves the problem in twelve lines. Sheldon walks home that day, alone. He doesn’t go to his room. He doesn’t watch Star Trek . He goes to the garage, where his father is fixing the lawnmower. George Sr. looks up, surprised. Sheldon never comes to the garage.

But later, alone in his room, he takes out his notebook and writes at the top of a fresh page: “Strategies for Defeating Paige: Volume 1.” Then he pauses, crosses out “Defeating,” and writes “Collaborating With.” He stares at it for a long moment, then closes the notebook.
