Missy, unfazed: “Sheldon was right. You’re a sinner.” Meemaw: “I’m a winner, honey. There’s a difference.” Missy: “Mom’s gonna kill you.” Meemaw: “Only if you tell her.”

They strike a deal: Missy gets $50 for silence. Missy asks if she can get it in cash, “because Mom checks my piggy bank.” George Sr. is fixing the lawnmower when Sheldon comes in, distraught. Sheldon explains that Missy has been bribed, Meemaw is hiding ill-gotten gains, and his mother is oblivious. George laughs. Sheldon: “This isn’t funny. Mary storms out, humiliated. Mary is furious at Meemaw — not for the gambling, but for the lying and the public scene. Sheldon listens from the stairs. He goes downstairs and says: “I calculated that if Meemaw had told the truth immediately, the probability of a fight was 23%. By lying, it rose to 89%. Therefore, her sin wasn’t greed. It was poor statistical reasoning.”

Sheldon smiles — a rare, genuine smile. He opens the laptop. The boot time is 12 seconds. He whispers: “Worth every penny of sin.”
